 iPhone vs. LG Voyager

iPhone or LG Voyager Better?

After reading cnet.com’s prizefight on which phone is the ultimate WINNER in there OPINION only I had to write a little something on putting up the Apple iPhone (service provided by AT&T) against the new LG Voyager (service provided by Verizon).

LG Voyager Open

Videos from of our friends at PhoneScoope.com

Lets layout some of the facts and features of both phones up against each other. The Apple iPhone as most of the “fans” and owners know does not have the 3G network support (built-in hardware) but the LG Voyager does. With that advantage over the iPhone it will attract the high-speed junkies of newer integrated PDA cell phones. One downside of this and what was most surprising to me was the LG Voyager does not have WI-FI. Ouch, that hurt when I typed it out, once again, the LG Voyager does not have WI-FI. I guess what some of you may be thinking now is why bother with WI-FI when you have a dedicated 3G network support (where available) at your fingertips, literally. Good point but is it really when we it comes down the battery life (Steve Jobs is laughing right now).

 iPhone in hand

Let’s now look at the LOOK and style of both where the iPhone clearly has an advantage over the LG Voyager while the LG phone is a lot bulkier but carries an actual fold-out qwerty keyboard. This is pretty much a day vs. night instance when compared to the iPhone’s touch interface with the touch on-screen keyboard. While this all comes down to preference, I have to say I have become pretty darn fast with typing on my very own iPhone’s on-screen keyboard and it was without the assistance of the “smart keyboard” functions. While I miss having a physical keyboard with an iPhone, the LG Voyager’s keyboard will fulfill any blackberry user’s wet dream.

 LG Voyager in hand

The functionality of both phones provide it’s user with plenty but in the iPhone’s case some things are missing when battling with the LG Voyager. The LG Voyager has built in GPS (Global Positioning System – Like a built in navigation system) locator and real screen navigation BUTTONS to press that you can FEEL. Yes, you can not only touch the LG Voyager but you can FEEL it too right along with the vibration feed-back of the touch screen… this is getting nasty! To bandage things up the LG Voyager has support for stereo Bluetooth, multimedia messaging, over-the-air streaming video-music (Verizon’s V-Cast stuff), video recording via the built in digital camera, Voice recording and Voice dialing. Eat your heart out iPhone, this sucker listens and talks back in stereo sound, better not give it a female name.

 LG Voyager Ad

Now let’s listen clearly to both phones. The iPhone has a certain history in the field of being a musical player device (MP3 Player) while it pretty much is an iPod touch with extra bonus features, the iPhone has an iPod-centric history you just cannot beat. While we are in the bonus round we will go ahead and reward the LG Voyager for the number of added features we mentioned in the previous paragraph. We will also reward the iPhone for it’s iPod heritage and user friendliness found to surpass the LG Voyager in most aspects of the musical realm.

iphone vs lg voyager profile views

We want to conclude our review of the Apple iPhone vs. the LG Voyager with NO clear winner. While tallying up points for each phone we found a non-winning battle due to the differences in culture of both phones. If we were too choose a winner here at iPod Addicts it would clearly be the iPhone but that would only be our biased opinion. In my summary the new LG Voyager is a sexy beast like a very fast Aston Martin DBS while the Apple iPhone is a sexy lady more like a Sunday driven Ferrari F430.

my iphone just went out last week, something to do with the power button, took it to the apple store and they swapped it out with a new one, no questions asked. try that with other cell phone companies.

6. Verizon over AT&T
Written by Piker, on 12-07-2007 17:19
I gotta Voyager and i like it. iphone it isn\'t, but I\'s rather have it than switch to AT&T\'s shitty network. Voyager is a good phone for what it is, if not in direct comparison to the iphone. And don\'t get me wrong, i AM a Mac guy, but until AT&T gets some reliable service coverage, the choice is clear.
7. att service
Written by larry, on 12-07-2007 19:35
i have had att / cingular / bellsouthmobility back in the day - service since 1998 and never had any network issues with all of the cell phones i had including my iphone. i can't complain, i guess i am a lucky one. iphone does what i need it too plus it turnes heads more so than that voyager thing, apple is a revolution starter hands down, once again they did it with the iphone. whats next?

so your iphone broke in the first month of owning it? gotta love it... and guess what, any phone company will do that within 30 days, and if you've got verizon's insurance you can literally drive over and crush your phone and get a brand new one free of charge, no matter how old it is.

i would take one of those samsung Juke's over an iphone, and the jukes are retarted...

I wish people would stop comparing these 2 phones. Iphone is a smart phone, where as the Voyager is just a regular multi-media phone.

I have the iPhone and I love it! I rote this blog on my iPhone! If you won't to turn heads I would tell you to pick this Phone. Its a great phone! I never have played with the voyager so I don't no what its all about but if the voyager is all touch screen then why does it have key bored? It seems stupid to me! :?
17. smart phone?

Ok yes the voyager has 3G. Too bad its Internet sux. Wifi paired with REAL Internet wins.. Lg has a keyboard to compensate for its limited touchscreen making it a bulky ipod imitation. Graphics, video and audio capabilites are years behind iphones. iTunes dominates as far as music software and iphones ability to constantly be updated is key. Iphone's ability to use 3rd party apps makes its functionality second to no LG. Btw, I just browsed this entire website and write this from the iPhone which I haven't had to charge in 3 days. LG was brave to make a product to compete with an apple product, very flattering.

Personally i think the voyager has a much cooler and sexier design. But thats just me. anyways, to me the voyager wins hands down. i mean ive had the iphone from cingular and the phone itself is impressivly awesome compared to the other crappy phone ive had from verizon(which is prolly about 5 years old) but the service suks balls. cingular is the most shitiest company ever to exist.on top of all that, the bill was so incredibly expensive. :cry so when the voyager came out i was extatic! it has everything the iphone has and more (all for just about the best service[verizon] and a cheaper bill!)so truly i beleve the voyager is the best phone on the market for a while. GET IT NOW!! :zzz

I believe the iPhone is the better choice. In price, the voyager is more expensive when matching it's internet and memory with the iPhone. I also type a lot faster with the iPhone than on the voyager's qwerty keyboard. I also like the size of the iPhone. One screen is good enough for me and this also allows for a smaller phone. The iPhone is the best phone in my opinion.

My contract with tmobile is up in Feb, I plan to switch providers and was on the fence between the iphone and the voyager. I like to watch movies on www.watchtvsitcoms.com and I hear I can do that with the iphone. I found the screen to be to small on the voyager and internet slow when loading video stuff.

I own a voyager and i love it, my friends has an iphone and i like it as well.they are viturally the same phone except the voyager has many more fetures than the iphone. dont get me wrong the ipohne is a wonderful device, but if cooler features are what u want, then u want the voyager. you can wtach REAL tv shows from channels like MTV, CBS,Fox, Comedy Central, and others. u get to see full sohws. the ipohne doesnt come close to that. it also has a full keyboard which makes it so much easier to txt than the ipohne, ehich i find a little difficult to type with. the and for all the iphone was supossed to be, it doesnt even have a video camera, and its regfular camera is very boreing and basic. my old RAZR even had a video camera. the voyager has a video camera that can take up to an hour of videos. over all, i think the voyager does a lot more than the iphone, but i woulodnt mind owning an iphone.
27. Texting
Written by This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , on 01-13-2008 13:52
Ok, i'm tired of people saying that the voyager is easier to text on. It is not. They are both about the same. I can type a lot faster on the iPhone than the voyager. Others it is the other way around. So please shut up about which you can type better on b/c of the stupid qwerty keyboard. The iPhone's automatic spell check makes up for it's small keys. The response of the iPhone's touchscreen is also way better than the voyagers.

I rec'd an iphone for xmas and have not even opened the box yet. I am not a technical person - need the phone for business and internet. My delimna is that I am not sure if the Vogager is a better choice for me or not. I like the gps feature, I also like the live tv feature. Aside from that, I am really not sure what would affect me if I go ahead and keep the iphone. Any input?
29. Written by Therealdealjhill, on 01-15-2008 12:01
personally I think that non of u have really mentioned what's really matters. That is the fact that the iPhones software can be updated. It may be a little soft right now but, the features that are soon to be on this phone will kill any phone on the market. Now a days who cares that your phone has cool features anyway especially when the Internet on it is watered down(voyager). The iphones internet is unreal and will only get better when flash is added.I guess if you want basic features right now and are not willing to wait on awesome features with the iPhone go ahead and buy your voyager. As far as typing on the iPhone, u get use to it after a week or two so for all of u out there who have only used your friends iPhone of course you wouldnot be able to type on it genious.

Are all you LG fans just blind?? After Apple's latest UPDATE (which LG has yet to offer) Wow free GPS and enhanced TXT features on iphone just downloaded. LG users are so clueless they deserve the fat crappy plastic phone because they can't adapt and still prefer the QWERTY keys. LG will NEVER manufacture a replica of any Apple product well, let alone put out a better product. Get it through your thick brains.
31. Help me choose!
Written by This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , on 01-21-2008 14:28
Okay, I have Lg's V now and I'm not a big fan of the qwerty keyboard so please don't tell me that's why I should by the voyager because I could care less about it.

I cannot decide which phone I would rather have and here's why.

I want to browse the web while on my phone, that's probable the most important to me. So which is better for that?

I am a Verizon customer and I really like the service so I'm very apprehensive to switch to At&t just for the iphone, I want to make sure I'm making the right decision.

I was also told by a guy from At&t that with the iphone, it isn't covered by the insurance you can buy from At&t and I'm a clumsy person so I'd hate to break my phone and not be able to replace it. The voyager is covered by that.

I also want a good camera and the ability to take videos with my phone which the iphone doesn't have and the voyager does.

But ultimately I want to access the web quickly and with the actual website not some crappy version of the website, you know? So.. help me choose!

And please... adults help me, I don't need a 15 year old telling me oh the voyager is way cooler, it rocks, the iphone sucks or vice versa. I would appreciate some real opinions here.

Thank you.

If you don't care about anything but stictly internet, then i think you should go with the iphone. yes, they voyager does have a faster, 3g network, but the iphone has fuller internet capabilities and is wifi compatible so you can surf the internet at high speeds while you're at home, at a resturant, or in a hotel.

i like the iphone and i like the voyager but it really depend on you the both have good things so it depends on what fits your stile even thouth the voyager is cheaper your goin to pay it in the end ,for web and text. but ya its all on u .
34. iPhone Nav is not GPS
Written by Jed, on 01-27-2008 19:22
A correction to comment 30: iPhone did not magically sprout a GPS receiver with a firmware upgrade. It did get navigation using its existing cell and wireless receivers. Many have already commented on location errors using apparently out of date Skyhook data. If navigation is a key requirement, I'd give the nod to Voyager's real GPS.

However I do not like that VZW changes extra for the Nav feature, not to mention data. They may have a better network, but they nickle and dime you for every feature. And given VZW's history of crippling phone features, I'm reluctant to buy one. Hopefully the iPhone will force VZW to stop that particular trick.

its all based on opinion...everyone likes what they like PERIOD, POINT, BLANK!!!!
36. Non-biased opinion
Written by Truth B. Told, on 03-05-2008 01:24
Comparing the iPhone to the Voyager is seriously like comparing the Los Angeles Lakers to the Los Angeles Clippers this season. Not only is the iPhone far more advanced than the Voyager, but the iPhone can be UPDATED. I have worked in telecommunications for over five years, and have tested and used hundreds of cell phones and PDA's, and I can say this: THERE IS NO DEVICE THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN LIKE THE IPHONE. PERIOD.

38. Written by Marie, on 03-26-2008 14:50
Deciding on voyager or iphone. My main use for this type of equipment would be the ease of having my PDA and cell phone in one place. Years ago I had the palm phone but it was so bulky so I gave it up. What do you think?
39. Written by delfin1, on 03-26-2008 22:08
I have been playing with my sister's iphone for a while now, and I will get a voyager tomorrow for free from verizon. I have done a lot of research on the voyager.

I have concluded Voyager is better than iPhone only before adding third party applications. The iPhone blows the Voyager out of the water after it's been upgraded with third party applications. The voyager phone is really good, but verizon cripples it like it always does to all phones. And its a lot harder to hack the verizon os than it is to hack the iphone os.

Alriight...There is no question these fones are equal to each other. Ovi games are pretty nice on voyager because of real games such as Guitar Hero or Call of Duty but iphone is nice to because of the hacks. The only upside to the voyager is that it is verizon. IF THE IPHONE WAS VERIZON I WOULD BY IT. I hope everybody knows tho that verizon had the chance to buy the iphone before atnt. What a bunch of retards at verizon for no buying the iphone but no complainst for the voyager.

A buddy of mine purchased a Voyager and let me play around with his. Even though I messed with the voyager when it first came out it is still somewhat impressive. It is a different aninimal from the iPhone and I still favor the iPhone over it. It goes to show what a long way other compaies have in keeping up with Apple if that is their goal. iPhone still rocks over Voyager... look at the sales. And now with the rumors of the 3G iPhone costing $199 from ATT with a 2-year contract... WOOT WOOT.. can't beat that! Check out the post on the front page of www.ipod-addicts.com!

I'm just going to give my 2 cents really quick. If you're going to buy a phone for business purposes I would try the blackberry world edition or the blackberry curve first because they are specifically made for a business environment. Both the iPhone and the Voyager are more for the casual phone junky. And just letting you guys know, most people won't utilize the third party applications as much as a person posting here would. In the end I really think to the average person it is a negligible point. I prefer the Voyager, but would not mind an iPhone either (if AT&T wasn't so crappy a network).

I went with the T Mobile \"hotspot@home system and phone last year. Now I find out that if you want to upgrade to some of the new handsets that are hotspot@home capable (i.e. the Blackberrys), T Mobile is socking it to us older customers. New accout signups get Blackberries for free, we loyal cusomers get the shaft ($289 for a BB 8120, $349 for a curve). Tell me why I shouldn\'t switch back to AT&T and get an iPhone, or Veriozon and the Voyager? I\'d be paying about the same for the service, get much better internet and browsing, and probably the same cost for calling plans.
Sincerely,

If you are in highschool then i would suggest the iPhone. iPhone combines best of both worlds with the iPod and a cell phone. For a highschool ages person the iPhone fits in a lot better than the Voyager. Just my opinion from the admin at www.ipod-addict.com

Hey, I believe you should get an iPhone. Personally I think that they are more stylish to the eye and also, the iPhone allows you to carry all your songs and videos with you. So for a high schooler like you, the iPhone is the way to go.

54. After firmware upgrade, Voyager wins
Written by This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it website, on 06-09-2008 01:33
I owned a first-gen Iphone for 3 months and I sold it just to buy the Voyager. I have absolutely no regrets.

After the latest firmware upgrade. the Voyager browser now allows scrolling before a page is fully loaded. This is what the safari browser also does and speeds up browsing time on the Voyager substantially. Also, the upgrade improved the zoom in/zoom out function on the Voyager. To zoom in or out . a slider is activated by button or rocker and the page changes instantly.

With m.youtube.com, Voyager can see all of the same videos as iphone users with one major advantage. Unlike iphone users, voyager users can read the comments left by youtube viewers.

The actual phone service is no comparison as Verizon crushes Att. With the iphone I usually had no service inside a building.

Overall, I feel that the Voyager wins. It seems like everything is there for me to access quickly with the Voyager.
55. Written by This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , on 06-09-2008 21:33
Please I went to Verizon they had techs there trying to fix the phone and if they couldnt they easily swapt it out in store no hastle. ATT cant even support iphone they have to go through Apple not only that but with LG you can buy an extended battery where you cant even acces battery with Iphone. Plus when hurricane Katrina hit Verizon was the only network to have service because during disasters they move in mobile stations instantly to the disaster area not only that but gave each Verizon customer 30 days of free calls for emergencies now with that service to back up the Voyager I can easily say LG + Verizon is the best.
56. iPhone 3G
Written by This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , on 06-10-2008 21:10
The iPhone 3G is now the best phone on the market. The internet speeds are as fast as the voyagers and the software upgrade now allows the iPhone to have GPS, like the voyager. With these two things aside, the iPhone still has a better opperating system. It runs a version of OS X, which allows multiple applications to run at the same time. For example you can browse the internet (at 3G speeds, i may add) while listening to music. The power of the iPhone allows for fast, smooth transitions between applications. Lastly, the iPhone syncs with iTunes, the number one music store in the country, and holds all your songs that you have on your iPod. All in all, the iPhone is an amazing phone now with 3G to boot. As Steve Jobs showed the world yesterday in his URL=http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/0806wdt546x/event/index.html]WWDC Keynote[/URL], there is now an iPhone killer. It is the 3G iPhone.

Personally, I prefer the iPhone cause of the qwerty keyboard. The Voyager's touch screen gets very old and is a big waste of time. The pressure sensitive voyager is not the way to go. The iPhone's screen senses the electricity from your fingers so it requires less pushing and it is faster in recognizing that your finger is doing something on the screen. Also, I don't want to have to flip open my phone to type a message or url. Flip phones are now a thing of the past.

i own a voyager and personally i do thnk the txting is better in the voyager, all though u could get used to the i phones txting because i got used to the i touch writing, however att suks balls and gets very crappy service if they had better service the i phone would probably easily beat the voyager , but for now voyager is the way to go

Having used both, I would say the iPhone win with flying colors. The only downfall is no turn by turn. But everything else is far superior: custom apps, web browser, email, sms. The only thing I had to get used to was the touch screen keyboard after being accustomed to the tactile voyager keyboard. This only took me about a week!

Everyone talking about abilities to update firmware. I had my LG fastap firmware updated at Telus (In Canada) before the Iphone was even on the market. it came with f/w 06 and last release was f/w 07. Also when using this fantastic apple software, I've found spiderwebs of IP traffic all traceable back to steve jobs and apple to see everything that's on my ipod. I updated software i didn't use (itunes), and did everything that was mentioned on the apple site. And what happened? My 4th gen 20gb ipod was now a paperweight, a brick, a piece of crap.
All for using the apple update!
Word of warning. If you own ANY APPLE PRODUCT:

They hook you, promise you better features, they corrupt your unit, and then you will buy a newer better one again and again.

I haven't found any apple product, pound for pound, in any market which can't be compensated by up to three competitors for the same price. I would buy three laptops before an Airbook, or a PSP for wifi internet, and a voyager for phone. Many options true, but buying into apple is like buying into losing money to a monopolistic entity which rebrands the same IBM, Toshiba, Sharp, and other companies products with the promise of somthing different. Lies from the beginnin to the end of the line.

The fact that apple only releases it's products to one carrier is called a MONOPOLY! Something which apple knows best as they package everyone elses electronic components in sleek minimized packages, stick an apple, (Stolen from apple records) on the outside and then people will pay rediculous amounts of money on it.

Cost out of the box, rediculous, no value for money.

Cost to Operate, (in canada between 100-300$ per month. Out of the question unless you have a business plan which covers your bill and you don't pay for it.

I think that the iPhone is way ouy played! I had to make a choice between the two phones and went with the voyager. I played around with the iPhone (because everyone has one) and found that my finger s are too fat to type on the touch screen. I love the voyager granted it is more bulky but it has soo many features and does everything I need it to. The iPhone is amazing but I think you have to find a phone thats good for your needs and what works with your fingers! Love the voyager but the iPhone is an awesome phone. Voyager 1, iPhone 0 :x
